  7. This two-hour video training consists of three segments. The first part
  8. describes how the UNIX shell converts command lines into executing commands and
  9. takes a closer look at the shell's "metacharacters." Part 2 describes and
  10. demonstrates the important UNIX tools. The grep, sed, sort, and awk commands
  11. are covered in detail, as are regular expressions (a pattern matching language
  12. used by UNIX tools). Part 3 combines shell capabilities with UNIX tools to
  13. create useful applications

  15. The video presentation is done by Ray Swartz, a noted UNIX trainer and author
  16. of the course textbook "UNIX Application Programming, Mastering the Shell." The
  17. text is accompanied by the course manual that provides reading assignments,
  18. additional exercises, and addendum.
